The following are real life stories of teens who have suffered from teen pregnancies.

While the pregnancy rate decreased and then increased, the use of condoms increased and then decreased. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) surveyed high school males to find trends in condom use. Condom use rose from only 46.2% in 1991, to a high of 63% in 2003. Since then, however, the percentage of people who use comdoms has decreased to 61.5%. While this is a small change, it is enough to say that it is likely a contributing factor to the increase in teen pregnancies.

What is the right age to have sex?

A survey taken on Smartgirl.org, shows at what age girls believe it is right to engage in sex. About 11% of teenage girls believe it is acceptable to consent in sexual intercourse between the ages of 11 and 15. About 32.5% believe it is acceptable between the ages of 21 and 25. The majority, 46.3%, however, believe it is acceptable between the ages of 16 and 20. This is definately a large factor in the number of teen pregnancies in the United States per year. The media, celebrities and various teen idols, as well as many other aspects and ideas of modern, everyday life, have a significant impact on the way teens think and feel about sex. In the United States, about 750,000 teenage girls get pregnant each year.

Trends in teenage sexual behavior

The national YRBS is taken every two years during the spring semester. It provides important data of 9th through 12th grade students in schools across the country. In the latest edition, it was shown that the percentage of teens who have had sex has been steadily increasing since 2001. It has increased from 45.6 in 2001 to 47.8 in 2007. It was also shown that the use of birth control has decreased over this time period, which may very well be a cause of the increase in teen birth rate. Also, the percentage for use of birth control has dropped from 18.2% in 2001 to 16% in 2007. This means teenagers are engaging in more sexual activity, while reducing the use of birth control.

Teen birth rate has increased for the second year in a row!

As of 2005, the southwest holds the states with the highest rates of teen pregnancies. For girls aged 15-19, New Mexico, Nevada, and Arizona have the highest birth rates, in that order. The states with the lowest birth rates are New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine in that order. Massachusetts is 43rd out of the 50 states for teenage birth rates.

United States has highest pregnancy rate in industrialized world!

The United States has the highest pregnancy rate of any western industrialized country. Teen girls in this country have a 34% chance of becoming pregnant by the time they are 20, or about 745,000 pregnancies anually. Two thirds of these pregnancies occur with 18-19 year old girls. The countries pregnancy rate has been declining, but still remains the highest.

What are some effects of teen sexuality?

Being sexually active as a teenager can have serious consequences for both partners. It can also effect the people who are closest to you, or people in your immediate family. An example of this is given in Teenage Sexuality by Myra Immell. It was found that the "teen sons of adolescent mothers are 2.7 times more likely to land in prison" than sons of mothers who were not pregnant until after the age of 20. Another significant effect is that a large number of teens who are becoming parents, end up dropping out of high school. "Only about three of 10 adolescent mothers earn a high school diploma by the age of 30". In today's society, to earn a descent or comfortable salary, you really should have at least a degree from a 4 year college. So, as you can very well imagine, someone without even a high school diploma will end up struggling to get by. Add a child, and it makes it a lot harder.
